MTR, Susteon join hands to develop a new membrane-based separation systems

Membrane Technology and Research, Inc (MTR), a world leader in the development and production of membrane-based separation systems for the petrochemical, natural gas, and refining industries recently signed a cooperative agreement with the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL) for pilot plant testing with actual coal-derived syngas of their next generation of Proteus™ membrane for hydrogen separation from syngas as part of a transformational membrane process for CO2capture from integrated gasification combined cycle power plants. The improvements in hydrogen selectivity and thermal stability of these next generation Proteus™ membranes demonstrated at lab-scale are enabling radically new process integration of this technology to cost-effectively capture CO2 from the IGCC plants. MTR is partnering with Susteon in this project to leverage Susteon’s extensive expertise in the IGCC domain to optimize integration of MTR’s membrane technologies within the IGCC plant to lower the cost of electricity with 90% carbon capture by over 10%.

Susteon partners with PNNL’s to develop novel CO2-binding organic liquids (CO2BOLs)

Susteon Inc. & Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have jointly won an award from the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory to complete preliminary testing of novel CO2-binding organic liquids (CO2BOLs) for CO2 capture from syngas generated by coal gasification. These CO2BOls offer the potential to achieve high degree of CO2 removal with a total regeneration energy approaching 0.7 GJ/tonne of CO2, thus enabling cost effective CO2 capture from the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants compared with current technologies. In this project, Susteon will lead the process integration of this novel CO2 capture technology and conduct techno-economic analysis for IGCC applications for PNNL under this project. Susteon has the exclusive option for this technology to commercialize into the marketplace.

Susteon partners with UCLA for CO2 to construction products technology

Susteon is partnering with The University of California, Los Angeles in a recently selected project (awarded under the Funding Opportunity Announcement DE-FOA-0001849) from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory on “A Scalable Process for Upcycling Carbon Dioxide and Coal Combustion Residues into Construction Products”. Susteon will support UCLA in the development of a CO2 mineralization process that uses CO2 in flue gas and coal combustion residues to synthesize CO2NCRETE, a functional replacement for traditional concrete. The process will offer the coal power sector a pioneering pathway for solid waste and CO2 utilization to produce a value-added product with a large addressable market.

Susteon partners with NCSU For conversion of CO2 and shale gas to green acetic acid

Susteon is partnering with the North Carolina State University (NCSU) in a recently selected project from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory on   “Sustainable Conversion of Carbon Dioxide and Shale Gas to Green Acetic Acid via a Thermochemical Cyclic Redox Scheme”. This project, awarded under the Funding Opportunity Announcement DE-FOA-0001849, will develop a comprehensive proof-of-concept for sustainable and cost-effective production of acetic acid, a critical building block for the plastic industry, from CO2 and domestic shale gas.
